Featured Artist Profile
Judith T.
Irwin
Hometown: Berkeley, ca
Judith T. Irwin is a contemporary artist that depicts the living world around her. In her paintings, we see images of various plants with the artist focusing on the plant’s shadow. The plants in these paintings are still projections of their shadow lasting only for a few minutes before becoming distorted by the earth’s rotation around the sun. In her paintings we witness shadows of nature being depicted with vibrant colors, challenging the boundary between being and non-being.
Her talents lie not only in the visual arts but also in horticulture. For over 20 years she has freelanced as a fine maintenance gardener and aesthetic pruner. The combination of being a visual artist and a horticulturalist have been the inspiration for her shadow paintings. She has a bachelor degree in illustration design from California College of the Arts.
ART ON DISPLAY
Piece Name: CA. Poppy Collage
This CA. Poppy Collage painting was created from various California poppy shadows captured by photographing with a phone camera. The photographed images were then printed out and collaged together to create the composition for this painting. The use of the vibrant colors in this painting are inspired by the sunny springtime weather that the California poppies bloom so spectacularly with.

Piece Name: Yale Court Poppies
This Yale Court Poppies acrylic painting is a study on color theory. It is an example on how mixing certain colors the artist can create different values of the color black. The top part of this painting is painted in a warm black tone and the bottom is painted in a cool black tone. The subtle juxtaposition of blacks makes for an inviting experience to view this painting closer.
